MMA gloves don’t size by ounce โ they size by hand circumference (S / M / L / XL). This calculator uses the same fitting tables we use on wholesale orders, with separate guidance for training, grappling, sparring, and competition. Different sports inside MMA need different glove styles; the tool covers them all.
How MMA glove sizing works
Unlike boxing gloves (which use ounces), MMA gloves use hand circumference. The calculation:
- Measure your hand across the knuckles at the widest point, just below the thumb joint, with your hand in a relaxed fist.
- If you wrap your hands under the glove (common for sparring, less common for grappling), add ~1 cm to your measurement.
- Match the measurement to the size table below.
| Hand circumference | Men’s size | Women’s size |
|---|---|---|
| Under 17 cm / 6.7″ | XS | XS |
| 17โ19 cm / 6.7โ7.5″ | S | S |
| 19โ21 cm / 7.5โ8.3″ | SโM | M |
| 21โ23 cm / 8.3โ9.1″ | M | L |
| 23โ25 cm / 9.1โ9.8″ | L | XL |
| 25โ27 cm / 9.8โ10.6″ | XL | โ |
| Over 27 cm / 10.6″ | XXL | โ |
MMA glove styles โ and which to order for what
Training MMA gloves (5โ7 oz, open-finger)
The default style for daily MMA training. Padded knuckles, open fingers and palm so you can still grip for clinches and grappling transitions. Cowhide leather for premium, Maya-Hide synthetic for mid-tier, PU for entry-level retail. Most gyms order this in 30/40/25/5 split (S/M/L/XL) for a 100-member club.
Sparring MMA gloves (7 oz, hybrid)
Heavier padding over the knuckles than training gloves โ protects sparring partners during stand-up exchanges. Still open-palm for ground transitions. Required by most reputable gyms for any contact sparring sessions.
Grappling-only gloves (no thumb, minimal knuckle padding)
For wrestlers and grapplers who want hand protection during ground work but don’t strike. Lighter, more flexible than training MMA gloves. Some are essentially fingerless leather mittens.
Amateur MMA competition gloves (IMMAF-approved)
International Mixed Martial Arts Federation requires specific glove styles for sanctioned amateur bouts โ typically 6โ7 oz, attached-thumb, open-palm. Federation-specific approved-supplier lists exist; confirm with your sanctioning body before ordering competition stock.
Professional MMA competition gloves (UFC / ABC commission rules)
Pro MMA gloves are typically 4โ6 oz, lighter and less padded than training. Athletic Commission Boxing (ABC) commissions approve specific manufacturers for sanctioned pro fights. The glove must allow open-finger grappling but also score knockouts on stand-up exchanges. Stricter than amateur in approved-design specifications.
BJJ no-gi / submission grappling
Strictly speaking, BJJ players don’t wear gloves on the mat. But for cold-climate training or open-mat sessions where some striking is allowed, a thin grappling glove (no padding, just hand cover) is sometimes used.
Why MMA glove sizing matters for wholesale buyers
If you stock single-size MMA gloves, expect to lose 30โ40% of potential customers. A 100-member MMA gym typically needs:
| Size | Recommended stock share |
|---|---|
| XS | ~5% |
| S | ~20% |
| M | ~35% |
| L | ~25% |
| XL | ~12% |
| XXL | ~3% |
For retailers ordering 1,000+ pieces split this proportion. Our standard OEM/private-label MMA glove order is split this way unless the buyer specifies otherwise.

Frequently asked
Do MMA gloves come in ounces too?
Yes โ but ounce is a weight measurement, not a size. A 7 oz men’s M glove and a 7 oz men’s L glove weigh the same total grams (padding adjusts to fit the size). When buyers specify “7 oz” they mean the padding weight class, but they still need to specify S/M/L/XL for the hand-circumference fit.
Can I use boxing gloves for MMA?
No. Boxing gloves enclose the fingers and palm โ you can’t grip, grapple, or clinch effectively in them. MMA gloves are explicitly open-palm and partial-finger for that reason. Using boxing gloves for MMA training also teaches bad clinch mechanics that won’t translate to sparring.
What about kids’ MMA gloves?
We make junior MMA gloves at XS sizing on a smaller last (mould). Adult XS-on-adult-last is too long in the wrist column for under-12 hands. For kids’ MMA programs ordering wholesale, specify “junior MMA glove” on your quote.
How is this different from your Boxing Glove Fit Calculator?
Boxing gloves use ounces (8 / 10 / 12 / 14 / 16 / 18 / 20 oz) and your body weight is the primary fitting input. MMA gloves use hand circumference and S/M/L/XL letter sizing. Different sports, different conventions, different calculator. Try the boxing version if you’re fitting for boxing-only.
