Before you commit to a container shipment, work out exactly how many pieces fit and whether a 20-foot, 40-foot, or 40-foot high-cube is the right size. The calculator uses standard carton dimensions for boxing, MMA, and martial-arts equipment plus your quantity to give container fill percentage, total CBM, and a freight-method recommendation.

How the calculation works
The maths is straightforward but matters because freight costs scale with both weight and volume โ the carrier charges whichever is greater. For boxing and martial-arts gear, volume almost always exceeds weight (it’s bulky but lightweight), so the question becomes: how much volume does your order take?
- Cartons needed = total quantity รท pieces per carton (rounded up).
- Total CBM = cartons ร (L ร W ร H in metres).
- Container fill % = total CBM รท usable CBM of the container ร 100.
- Recommendation logic:
- Under 12 CBM โ LCL or air freight (FCL would be half-empty)
- 12โ28 CBM โ 20-foot FCL
- 28โ58 CBM โ 40-foot FCL
- 58โ65 CBM โ 40-foot high-cube FCL
- Over 65 CBM โ split into 2 containers OR consolidate at origin
Usable CBM by container type
| Container | External | Internal | Usable (with packing inefficiency) | Typical max load weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20-foot standard | 20ร8ร8.5 ft | ~33 CBM | ~28 CBM (85% efficient) | 21โ28 tonnes |
| 40-foot standard | 40ร8ร8.5 ft | ~67 CBM | ~58 CBM (87% efficient) | 26โ28 tonnes |
| 40-foot high-cube | 40ร8ร9.5 ft | ~76 CBM | ~65 CBM (86% efficient) | 27โ28 tonnes |
Boxing/MMA/martial-arts equipment is volumetric not heavy โ you’ll always fill the volume before you hit the weight limit, even with a 40HC packed wall-to-wall.
Indicative freight cost (Karachi to common destinations)
Live rates fluctuate weekly; these are sea-freight ranges typical for the last 12 months:
| Destination port | 20-foot FCL | 40-foot FCL | LCL per CBM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Felixstowe / Southampton, UK | $1,400โ$2,600 | $2,200โ$4,200 | $70โ$140 |
| Hamburg / Rotterdam, EU | $1,300โ$2,400 | $2,100โ$4,000 | $70โ$130 |
| New York / Los Angeles, USA | $2,000โ$3,800 | $3,200โ$5,800 | $95โ$180 |
| Sydney / Melbourne, AU | $1,600โ$2,800 | $2,600โ$4,500 | $85โ$160 |
| Toronto / Vancouver, CA | $2,200โ$3,900 | $3,400โ$6,000 | $100โ$190 |
| Dubai / Jebel Ali, UAE | $900โ$1,500 | $1,400โ$2,400 | $50โ$95 |
Add origin handling (~$150), bunker fuel surcharge (~5โ10% of base), and destination charges (~$200โ$400) to the base rate for a total freight estimate.
Quick reference โ pieces that fit per container
| Product | 20-foot FCL | 40-foot FCL | 40-foot HC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boxing gloves (10 pairs/carton, 0.060 CBM) | ~4,600 pairs | ~9,600 pairs | ~10,800 pairs |
| MMA gloves (12 pairs/carton, 0.039 CBM) | ~8,600 pairs | ~17,800 pairs | ~20,000 pairs |
| Hand wraps (100 pairs/carton, 0.036 CBM) | ~77,000 pairs | ~161,000 pairs | ~180,000 pairs |
| Punching bags 5ft (1 per carton, 0.256 CBM) | ~109 bags | ~226 bags | ~253 bags |
| BJJ gi (10/carton, 0.096 CBM) | ~2,900 gis | ~6,000 gis | ~6,770 gis |
| MMA shorts (50/carton, 0.07 CBM) | ~20,000 shorts | ~41,400 shorts | ~46,400 shorts |
When to choose air freight instead of sea
- Order under 100 kg total / 0.5 CBM: express courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS) โ 3โ6 working days, $5โ$10/kg.
- Order 100โ500 kg: air freight via consolidator โ 5โ10 working days, $3โ$6/kg.
- Order over 500 kg AND under 8 CBM: still air freight; sea freight at this volume is cheaper per kg but adds 20โ30 days transit + handling complexity.
- Order over 12 CBM: always sea freight (LCL or FCL) โ air becomes prohibitively expensive above this point.
Three things buyers often miss
- Volumetric weight on air freight. Carriers charge whichever is greater โ actual kg, or (LรWรH in cm) / 6000. For lightweight gear like apparel, you almost always pay volumetric. Pack tight.
- Hazardous-goods rules for boxing-glove inserts. Some gel-padded gloves contain materials classified as DG (dangerous goods) by air. Confirm with your supplier before assuming air freight.
- Container-load minimum for FCL discount. Most freight forwarders quote significantly cheaper rates at 80%+ container fill. If you’re at 65% on a 40-foot, ordering 10โ15% more stock often costs less per piece total.
